Disney's Der König der Löwen — Hamburg
For over 25 years, Hamburg has been home to one of the world's longest-running productions of Disney's The Lion King (Der König der Löwen). The show is staged at the Theater im Hafen Hamburg — a dedicated venue on the south bank of the Elbe, accessible via a short ferry crossing that's part of the experience.
The production is performed in German, but the visual spectacle — the costumes, puppetry, choreography, and staging — is so strong that even non-German speakers often find it entirely worth attending. The music (Hans Zimmer / Elton John) is iconic and largely familiar regardless of language.
What makes it special: This isn't a touring production — Hamburg has its own permanent company that has been performing this show for a generation. The quality is consistently high.
Getting there: Take the HVV ferry (line 62) from Landungsbrücken across to the theater, or walk from Veddel (S3/S31). The ferry crossing itself, especially at night, is a lovely start to the evening.
Price: Tickets vary — check official channels for current pricing and availability. Not a budget option, but a genuine Hamburg institution.
